Lions Club of Berri

Riverland, South Australia, Australia

Projects

Lions is a great community service organisation! People join Lions because they want to user their intellect, creativity, commitment and enthusiasm to get things done. This is where you can find out about the sorts of projects that your local Lions Club is doing. Like what you see? Get involved!

Thanks to the funds raised in our community through BBQ's, sausage sizzle, monthly bingo, and sale of Lions Mints and Christmas Cakes, we are able to support the following local projects

Carers Day

Berri Lions provide a day of fun activity and fellowship for Carers from across the Riverland and Mallee who hold the primary responsibility for caring for a loved one. The day involves boat tours, entertainment, lunch and fellowship - all provided by Berri Lions free of charge to those present. We have been proud to be associated with Riverland and Mallee Carers Inc for over 15 years.

CARA Camp

Berri Lions provide a camp as part of the Community Accommodation and Respite Agency (Cara) and Novita Childrens Services Camp for Kids program. The children are hosted in accommodation at the Berri Riverside Caravan Park, and are provided with entertainment including houseboat cruises, visits to the Monash Adventure Parkand a local clown. Berri Lions also provide all the catering, food and support to the children and the staff from Cara. The camps provide a challenging and exciting holiday option for children with multiple and severe intellectual disabilities, and children with physical disabilities. This camp provides children with a chance to participate in recreational activities, socialise with their peers and challenge their abilities in a fun, safe and supportive environment. Camps for Kids ensures that children with disabilities get the same opportunities as their able bodied peers. The Camp provides a valuable respite service. It enables families and carers looking after children with multiple and severe disabilities to have a break, knowing that their children are being well cared for by staff of Novita and Berri Lions volunteers. To join us in helping to provide this fantastic opportunity in our local community, consider joining Lions!

Schools Tree Day

Our Club has a proud history of supporting National Tree Day. Over many years involvement, we have planted thousands of trees in different areas around Berri. Thank you to students, teachers and helpers from Berri Primary School, Glossop High School Middle School and Riverland Special School for being part of our project. We also thank Berri Barmera Landcare and Big River Toyota for their ongoing support. It creates fantastic environmental and healthy living outcomes!

Pyjama Drive

Each year in May Berri Lions collect PJs to distribute to needy kids in our community. All the PJs collected stay in the region, and help make a childs day. When you see us at the Riverland Plaza, please help by donating a pair (or two) of brand new fluffy pjs to help a kid in our community.

Glossop High School Scholarships

Each year, Berri Lions provide 2 scholarships to Year 9 students at Glossop High School. These scholarships involve sponsoring these students to attend a YMCA Leadership Camp, encouraging self development, leadership and personal skills.

Youth of the Year

2015 Contestants and judges 2017 contestants with President Debbie 2016 Contestants

Berri Lions proudly participate in the national Lions Youth of the Year programme. The programme encourages personality development, confidence, self-expression, citizenship and leadership in young people. We ask our judges to help in doing this by selecting ultimately the Youth of the Year, a youth under 19 years of age, with poise and personality who can take his or her place in any community and who would be a fine ambassador for the youth of today whether traveling within Australia or overseas.

Roadside Clean up

Each year, members of our Club assist the local community by cleaning up the roadside between Berri and Lyrup. There's always a huge amount of rubbish!

You can help us by not dropping your rubbish!
