Berri Lions celebrate another successful year of service - July 2019

Berri Lions celebrated a successful year of service at their Handover Dinner held at the Berri Hotel recently. Over 50 people attended, entertained by folk group The Cauldron.
In his President’s address, Lion Dennis Matthews highlighted the exciting projects the Club participating in over the previous 12 months, including
    • hosting Berri Merry Christmas and the Berri Easter Carnival
    • holding the annual Pyjama Drive, collecting warm PJs for Riverland kids in need
    • sponsoring a local student to attend an Operation Flinders camp
    • establishing the Terry Kearney Memorial Scholarship and awarding two local students
    • hosting a Lions Skin Cancer screening in June
    • hosting the local Club final, and the State Lions Youth of the Year public speaking final in Berri in April
    • participating in Lions projects, such as the Recycle for Sight project, Lions Clubs International Peace Poster competition
The Club has also supported the RFDS, the Riverland Cancer Council support group, the Million Paws Walk, Foodbank Riverland and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, as well as Lions projects such as the Skin Cancer screening project, the Australian Lions Foundation, Lions Clubs International Foundation and the Kids Cancer Genome project. Donations were also made to assist in areas impacted by flood and drought.
President Dennis noted that this work is not possible without the support of our local community. Purchasing Lions Christmas Cakes and Mints, buying a sausage at Bunnings or a bingo or raffle ticket helps Berri Lions to help the community.
President Dennis made a number of presentations to members for their important contributions. Lion Jenny Thiele was presented with a James D Richardson Honour Award for her outstanding contribution over a number of years, including facilitating the annual camp for disabled children through the CARA Camp for Kids program.
Past District Governor David Thomas conducted the installation of the new officers for the 2019-20 Lions year, and inducted a new member to the Club.
Next year Berri Lions will mark 50 years of service to the community. A community event is planned to celebrate the occasion.

Berri Lions bring Christmas to Berri - August 2016

    CHRISTMAS RETURNS TO BERRI
The Lions Club of Berri is proud to announce that it will be hosting the 2016 Berri Merri Christmas after a one-year absence of the event on the Riverland Christmas Calendar. With the support of other local Service Clubs, including the Rotary Club of Berri and the Riverland Zonta Club, the Christmas event is planned for Friday 2nd December 2016. With most activities to be held on the lawns of Vaughan Terrace, a fireworks display will also be included on the river near the Berri bridge.
President of the Lions Club of Berri, Debbie Tanner commented, “Our Club is pleased to be involved in this community event after the disappointment in 2015 when the Christmas event was not held. With a unanimous decision by our members to take on the role as host, we are excited at the prospect of being involved in what had previously been a very successful family and business orientated event”.
Debbie added, “While our Club has agreed to host the event, a lot of support is anticipated from the local communities through sponsorship and other forms of participation. The 2016 Berri Merri Christmas will be held two weeks later than previous years which will make it even more festive”.
Debbie noted, “The Berri Merri Christmas will also be an opportunity for the local CBD businesses to remain open for late night trading while activities at the event will hopefully attract many families from across the Riverland to attend. Entertainment, activities for children, stalls, amusements, food vans, fireworks and dance are amongst the plans for this year”.
Debbie concluded, “Planning has now commenced and our Club is pleased to have the guidance and experience of Barry Phillips to assist with the coordination. Barry’s past involvement with the Berri Merri Christmas will be beneficial to ensure that once again the Berri community will host a Christmas celebration which will bring Santa back to our town”.
